Creating contrasting, fun eye shadow looks is one of my favorite application techniques. With so many colors to choose from, it’s easy to go from soft and subtle to bold and bright. Even with traditional neutral shades, you can still create some beautiful pairings to really make your eyes stand out. So how do you know what to shades to use? Let’s check it out!
The best way to create this eye shadow look is to use shades that contrast with the eye color. This goes back to a simple color wheel. A color wheel is simply a circle with different colored sectors used to show the relationship between colors.
Colors found next to each other on the color wheel create an analogous color scheme. This means that they usually match well and create smooth, comfortable designs and tend to be pleasing to the eye.
The color across the wheel is the complementary color (also known as the contrasting or opposite color). If you want to create a more intense look, first, find the shade that most closely represents your eye color. Then look directly across the wheel. By using eye shadows and eyeliners in the complementary color, it will intensify your eye look, and make your eyes stand out.
Now, you might a brown-eyed girl like myself and be thinking, “Hmm…this is great, but there is no brown on the color wheel.” And, you’d be correct. Because brown eyes typically contain shades of oranges and reds, blues (particularly Cobalt or Navy) and greenish-golds are a top pick for creating a more intense look.
Furthermore, this chart gives a nice break down of eye colors matched with their color wheel opposite. For those of you with hazel or gray eyes, your eye color tends to fluctuate, so keep that in mind. Typically you’re going to follow the green eyes guidelines, and sometimes the blue eyes guidelines.
