5 Steps to Diminish Blackheads

Blackheads can be one of the most annoying skin care issues.  I’ve personally dealt with them off and on since I was a teenager, so I understand how frustrating it can be when you get them.  That’s why I want to share five tips with you that will help you diminish them without breaking the bank.

What are blackheads?

Blackheads are tiny/small bumps found on the skin that appear when a hair follicle becomes clogged with sebum (an oily secretion of the sebaceous glands) and debris such as makeup, sunscreen, etc. Blackheads are a mild form of acne lesion that can appear all over the body, though they are most commonly found on the face.

How do blackheads occur?

“Blackheads occur when pores become clogged. Each pore on your skin—referred to medically as pilosebaceous units—contains a hair follicle and sebaceous (oil) gland. This sebaceous gland is tasked with producing sebum, an oily substance designed to keep the skin hydrated and soft. An excess of sebum production can result in a plug at the top of the pore, and when a plug is formed, sebum will build up, catching and collecting dead skin cells and bacteria on its way. This can result in a comedo, which refers to single acne lesion, and this comedo can either be open or closed.”  (ref. bioclarity.com)

As you can see, blackheads result from clogged pores.  So it’s important to keep your pores as clear as possible to help prevent new blackheads from forming.  But, if you’ve already got blackheads, there are a few easy steps you can take at home without spending a lot of money to help get rid of them.

5 Ways to Diminish Blackheads at Home
  • Cleanse
    • Be sure to wash your face one to two times per day to remove buildup of makeup, oil, etc.
    • Keep pillowcases and towels clean by washing them often
  • Exofilate
  • Steam
    • Very relaxing
    • Opens pores to loosen blackheads making extraction easier and more gentle on your skin
  • Detoxify
    • Use a bamboo charcoal detoxifying mask that wipes off easily
      • One to two times a week
      • Gentle on skin
    • Fizzing action:
      • Opens pores
      • Oxygenates the skin
      • Removes dead skin cells
    • Leaves skin more radiant, brighter, and softer
  • Moisturize
    • Oily skin occurs when skin is dry, and your body overcompensates by producing more oil
    • By moisturzing, you actually help reduce oil production, which leads to fewer clogged pores
    • Use a moisturizer that will not clog pores
